The much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 mini-auction took place on Tuesday, December 19, at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai – for the first time outside India. All ten IPL franchises spent a combined total of Rs 230.45 crore to sign as many as 72 players of their choice for the upcoming season. Mitchell Starc (INR 24.75 crore) and Pat Cummins (INR 20.5 crore) were the highlight of the event as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) broke their bank to acquire the services of the two Australians.

However, apart from such blockbuster signings, some franchises also made several steals. They managed to fill up the vacant spots with top-class players without spending much of their purses. There were also some bad buys, where franchises had to spend a lot on players who could give any guarantee of their returns. On that note, let’s take a look at the top 5 steal deals in the IPL 2024 auction.

5. Gerald Coetzee – ₹ 5 crore by MI

Ahead of the auction, there was news that bowlers would be allowed to bowl two bouncers in an over in the coming season. Not sure if that had any impact on World Cup winners Starc and Cummins getting over 20 crores. Even while Harshal Patel and Alzarri Joseph earned over Rs 10 crore, Gerald Coetzee, South Africa’s star bowler in the 2023 World Cup, earned just Rs 5 crore from Mumbai Indians (MI). The right-arm pacer ended up as the highest wicket-taker for the Proteas, taking 20 wickets at an incredible average of 19.80. The five-time champions needed a good bowler to bolster the department and they got one of the best in the market at a great deal.
