Following the defeat against the Netherlands, Temba Bavuma’s South African team have been knocked out of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 and will be going home. Perhaps, no one had expected them to not qualify for the semi-finals, given the start they had in the Super 12s.
After being robbed of a point against Zimbabwe due to rain, South Africa picked up wins against Bangladesh and India. However, the high-flying Proteas team were brought down to the ground as Pakistan beat them by 33 runs on Thursday. South Africa were expected to win their last match against the Netherlands and reach the semis.
But fans were left in shock as the Netherlands pulled off an upset on Sunday, defeating Temba Bavuma and Men by 13 runs. Chasing a 158-run total, South Africa kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The Netherlands denied them having a good start as both Quinton de Kock (13) and Temba Bavuma (20) departed inside the first six overs of the innings. Bavuma, once again, was criticized for his slow innings as he made run-a-ball 20.
R Rossouw steadied the ship and upped the ante with a 19-ball 25. However, the star with the ball, Brandon Glover sent Rossouw back to leave South Africa in trouble at 64 for 3. Aiden Markam (17 off 13) was also guilty of not converting the start into a big score.
South Africa had lost four wickets for 111 runs at the end of 15 overs. At that time, they would have backed themselves to chase the target. But Glover then accounted for the wicket of in-form David Miller (17), thanks to a sensational catch from van der Merwe. Two balls later, Glover sent Parnell back to pull the game back in the favour of the Netherlands.
Klassen too crumbled under the pressure of keeping up with the required rate as South Africa fell 13 runs short of the target. With that defeat, South Africa are knocked of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 and fans are leaving no stone unturned in trolling South African captain, Temba Bavuma. Bavuma has had a disappointing run with the bat at the World Cup, having managed only 91 runs in 5 matches at a dismal strike rate of 108.
