India ended the ODI series against Australia on a sour note as the Kangaroos beat India 2-1. India lost to Australia by 21 runs. With the series win, the Yellow brigade became the number one ranked side in ODIs.  This is India’s first series defeat at home since they went down 2-3 to Australia in March 2019. Mitchell Starc breathed fire into India’s batting in the first two games of the series.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma was not available for the first ODI as he had to attend his brother-in-law’s wedding. Speaking on the same, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has implored Rohit Sharma to be available for all the matches ahead of the World Cup. Rohit was also not among the runs in all three ODIs. Rohit scored 13 at Visakhapatnam and 30 off 17 balls with two fours and two sixes at Chennai but failed to convert his start in the third ODI.

You need continuity in leadership – Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma missing games for India

“I think he needs to play every game. You can’t have a captain who is there for one match and not there for the rest. It is so important. It can happen to any other player but I think I know it was a family commitment, so he had to be there. That’s understandable. When it comes to the World Cup, you can’t have a family commitment; it’s as simple as that. Maybe before that, finish everything that you have unless it’s an emergency. Emergency is something completely different,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

“You need continuity in leadership. There’s a feeling that you have got everybody with you, otherwise, there are two leaders. Then there are two leaders that the team is looking at,” Gavaskar added. Ajay Jadeja had also admonished Rohit Sharma for missing too many games due to fitness concerns and injury in an interview on Cricbuzz. Kapil Dev also had warned Rohit about his declining fitness levels.
