After Glenn Maxwell was ruled out of the Australia-England World Cup clash yesterday, Pat Cummins and his team have suffered another setback two days before the big game. News has now emerged that Mitchell Marsh, the explosive Western Australian batsman, has flown home due to personal reasons. In a statement released by Cricket Australia, it has been mentioned that no specific timeline has been set for Marsh’s return which rules him out of the marquee event for an indefinite period.

“Australian allrounder Mitchell Marsh has returned home from the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 late last night for personal reasons,” the statement said. “A timeline on his return to the squad is to be confirmed. No further detail will be offered at this time”, the statement read.

Marsh made a significant contribution to the tournament with a couple of key performances, and his absence, together with Maxwell’s, will upset the team’s equilibrium. Maxwell was ruled out of the game owing to a concussion that he suffered after falling from the back of a golf cart. According to the protocols associated with concussion, he will be out of action for around six days. Australia are now left with a selection conundrum as they have only 13 players at their disposal.

Aussies look to maintain winning streak

In the absence of Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh, Australia will have to decide whether to play both Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis or to bring in the left-handed Alex Carey.

Australia started their campaign terribly as they lost two games on the trot but the five-time champions have staged a remarkable comeback, winning four consecutive matches. They are now in a pretty ideal position to make it through to the knockouts. With three group-stage matches remaining, starting with the crucial clash against arch-rivals England on November 4, Australia is determined to avoid any setbacks. Much to their delight, Jos Buttler’s England side has performed poorly in the World Cup, and Australia would relish the opportunity to further inflict their misery.
