The most recent setback for Team India was their loss to Australia in the World Test Championship final in London. They have often fallen short of going all the way and winning a significant trophy to end their 10-year drought. Dilip Vengsarkar, the former chief selector who has closely studied the Indian cricket team in recent years, thinks that previous selectors lacked vision and “deep knowledge” of the sport.

India has previously advanced to the WTC final in 2021 but fell to New Zealand by a staggering eight-wicket margin. They advanced to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup in Australia the previous year when they lost to eventual champions England. Under MS Dhoni’s leadership, India won its last trophy during the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Shikhar Dhawan leading India in a limited-overs series versus Sri Lanka in July 2021 is an example given by Vengsarkar. Because of the WTC 2021 final plus the test series versus England that followed, the majority of the more experienced players were unable to participate in this.

Vengsarkar said, “The unfortunate part is that the selectors I have seen over the last six-seven years neither have the vision, deep knowledge about the game or cricketing sense. They made Shikhar Dhawan India captain (when tours overlapped and main players were unavailable); it is where you can groom the future captain.”

Vengsarkar slammed the BCCI as well, stating that playing the IPL every single year was insufficient and that bench strength is vital. The former Chief selector said, “You haven’t groomed anybody. You just play as it comes. You talk about the richest cricket board in the world, where is the bench strength? Just having IPL, earning crores of rupees in media rights, it should not be the only achievement.”

India’s next tour of the West Indies will begin on July 12 and last for two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is. The Test games will be a part of the next WTC cycle from 2023 to 2025.
