Square Enix to start using AI for game development and marketing

President of video game company Square Enix, Takashi Kiryu in a recent announcement revealed that the company starting this year will be heavily focusing on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for game development and marketing.

The announcement comes from a New Year’s Letter that outlined the company’s plan for this year and since AI tech have advanced since its inception, the company may very well be planning to utilize it.

Kiryu talks about using AI for marketing as well as game development. While the marketing part is quite understandable and have been done by bother companies, the game development is yet to see a proper utilization of AI.

Without going into specifics, he said, “In the short term, our goal will be to enhance our development productivity and achieve greater sophistication in our marketing efforts.”

Talking about the longer term plan, he said, “we hope to leverage those technologies to create new forms of content for consumers, as we believe that technological innovation represents business opportunities.”

Furthermore, he also revealed that the company is also focusing on new technologies, like Blockchain, Web 3.0, and Cloud services.

Gamers might not be excited about Square using AI, as they ultimately want a game that is enjoyable and in most cases, companies using AI have to release only sub-par/ lazy content in order to cut cost.

The company back in 2022 sold some of its most iconic IPs like Tomb Raider, Deus Ex along with their development studios during the start of Web 3 gaming which also did not sit well with gamers.

Square dubbed this move as their plan to re-allocate resources among its other division as there are a lot more games under Square like Final Fantasy, Octopath Traveller, Dragon Quest and many more.

Apart from that, gamers will be able to play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth from the original Final Fantasy VII that was split into a trilogy, new DLC for Final Fantasy XVI coming out this year.
