The Ashes 2023 has got off to a rollicking start. The first Test match at Edgbaston is set for an exciting finish on Day 5 with Australia needing 174 runs and England needing seven wickets to win. The Kangaroos ended Day 4 at 107-3. David Warner fell to Olie Robinson for 36 off 57 balls with four fours. Then Stuart Broad came and picked up the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith for not too many runs.
When wickets were falling around him, Usman Khawaja was batting solidly at the other end on an unbeaten 34 off 81 balls with six fours. Meanwhile, the Barmy Army put out a vociferous chant trolling Steve Smith about the sandpaper incident that happened at Cape Town in 2018. The chant went something like ‘We say you cry on the telly’… Smith has not been at his best in the first test as he scored 16 in the first innings and 13 in the second innings.
In the first innings, England got to 393-8 and then put out a shock declaration. The chief contributors for the Three Lions were Zak Crawley, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. Root scored an unbeaten 118 off 152 balls with seven fours and four sixes. Bairstow made a run a ball 78 with 12 fours. Australia in reply ended seven short of England’s total. Khawaja was the shinning star for the Kangaroos as he scored 141 off 321 balls with 14 fours and three sixes.
The left-hander had support from Travis Head and Alex Carey who made 50 off 63 balls with eight fours and one six. Alex Carey made a cracking 66 off 99 balls with 10 fours and one six. In the second innings, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon picked up four wickets each to keep England to 273. Root, Harry Brook and Ben Stokes got 40s. There was rain on the third day of the game which meant a substantial amount of play was lost.
Australia are coming off a high from the World Test Championship final as they beat India by 209 runs. England had also warmed up to the Ashes by registering a comprehensive win in the four-day Test match against Ireland. There are still four Test matches to be played.

@stevesmith49 dealing this with a smile. One of the greatest player to bat, he did something bad, he regrets and he faced the consequences. His comeback is no less than an inspiration for many. Nerdie Stevie lives for cricket.

If Australia wins tomorrow, that will be the best response to the crowd who are mocking the 'greatest' of test cricket. #ENGvsAUS #Ashes2023

This is why I love watching games especially in England from my television ( be it football or Cricket) the banter is unsettling for the opposition and it's fun 🤣🤣🤣ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ Wish we Indians can create such atmosphere, but it'll never happen so..

This is what, how a crowd respects towards a game..
In our country , the way crowd support Virat Kohli in the same way they deal with AB devilliers.
Even, Once Indian crowd booed Smith, Virat Kohli asked the crowd instantly to respect him not to disgrace him. pic.twitter.com/Ge2bSsaORr— Ramandeep Kaushik (@Raman8398) June 19, 2023
