In the ODI World Cup 2023 match on Monday against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Angelo Mathews faced a contentious ‘timed out’ dismissal. The incident unfolded as Angelo Mathews encountered issues with his helmet before even receiving a delivery. When the Bangladesh captain appealed to the umpire, Mathews was required to leave the field without having the chance to face a single ball, and the dismissal was officially recorded as ‘Timed out.’

This particular occurrence marked Angelo Mathews as the first batter in international cricket to be dismissed in such a manner. As Mathews walked onto the field, a Bangladeshi fielder reminded Shakib of MCC’s rule, prompting the latter to make an appeal that led to Mathews’ dismissal.

The controversial incident also drew criticism from former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, who has been actively sharing his thoughts on various aspects of the ongoing tournament on his YouTube channel.

Shoaib Akhtar criticizes Shakib!

Shoaib Akhtar expressed his disapproval of Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan’s actions, suggesting that Shakib could have shown more sportsmanship towards Mathews. Akhtar stated on social media, “Very much against the spirit of cricket. I know it’s in the rule book, but since no one has ever appealed before, Shakib could have avoided this too.”

In the aftermath of the dismissal, Angelo Mathews found himself in heated altercations with the Bangladesh cricketers. Later, he criticized the Tigers during a press conference, labelling their actions as ‘disgraceful.’ Despite Mathews’ notable performance, where he picked up two wickets by dismissing Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib, Sri Lanka ultimately lost the match by three wickets.

The controversy took another turn when fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock revealed that the two minutes between a batter being dismissed and the next batter or non-striker taking strike had already passed when Mathews encountered helmet issues. However, Mathews presented video evidence on Social Media to support his claim that the umpires had made an error in giving him out. He stated, “4th umpire is wrong here! Video evidence shows I still had 5 more seconds even after the helmet gave way! Can the 4th umpire rectify this, please? I mean safety is paramount as I just couldn’t face the bowler without a helmet.” Angelo Mathews also provided visual proof, emphasizing the time gap between the catch being taken and the helmet strap coming off.
