Sehwag tears apart Shubman Gill after he nearly bottles up run chase against PBKS in IPL 2023

Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings starred in yet another nail-biting finish in the IPL 2023. In what has been a sudden turnaround, the last five games have yielded last-over finishes in the competition. It looked like an easy chase for GT at one stage before PBKS put together some tight bowling in the last few overs and made it tough for the Hardik Pandya-led side to get across the line. The match was finished by Rahul Tewatia.
Shubman Gill was at the forefront of it all. In GT’s batting innings, he scored 67 off 49 balls with seven fours and one six. He started very well but towards the end overs, batting became more and more difficult. Gill was there till the end of the innings, but deep in his heart, he would have wanted to stay till the end and finish the job for his side. Sehwag had a slightly different point of view, he said that Gill should not have thought of personal milestones but he should have just attacked more towards the end to take the pressure off the team.

“He scored 67 off 49 balls but when did he reach his fiifty? He reached his fifty off maybe 41-42 balls so in 7-8 balls he has scored 17 more runs. The acceleration came there after he had reached his fifty. If even that had not happened then GT would have chasing maybe 17 instead of 7 in the last over,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz. Gill has been the poster boy of Indian cricket over the last few months and has even scored a double hundred in ODIs.
“You can’t think let me score a fifty and we will anyway win the match. This is cricket. The moment you think about your own performance (instead of the team), you will get a tight slap from cricket. You can’t think like that. If he had showed the same intent and played at close to a strike rate of 200 when he was nearing fifty then he could have reached his milestone a lot earlier and saved more deliveries for his team,” Sehwag added.
