‘Revenue aa hi rhe, fir Match jite ya na Jite, Bhad me jaye’- Fans react as Indian Cricket Board makes INR 7,606 crore revenue in fiscal year 2021-22

The Indian Cricket Board remains the richest board in the cricketing circles. The Board has been getting a huge chunk of money from the Cricket Governing Body’s central revenue pool. At present, the Board will earn a generous amount of 230 Million in the cycle of 2024 to 2027. On another note, this huge surge in earnings will result in the Board paying more taxes to the government. It has come to light that the board has paid 1159 crore as Income Tax in the financial year 2021-22.

A question was raised on this matter in the Rajya Sabha Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary dwelt into the specifics of the amount of Income tax paid. He also talked about the Income and Expenditures of the Board for the last five years according to the returns filed. For the Board, it has been raking in the moolah since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL)  in 2008, which has become a Billion Dollar League. Cricketers dream to be a part of it.

In the financial year 2020-21, the Board paid Rs 844.92 crore in income tax, slightly lower than Rs 882.29 crore paid in 2019-20. In FY2019, the board paid Rs 815.08 crore as taxes, higher than Rs 596.63 crore paid in 2017-18. In the 2021-22 fiscal, the Board earned a revenue of Rs 7,606 crore, while its expenditure stood at close to Rs 3,064 crore. In 2020-21, its income stood at Rs 4,735 crore and expenditure at Rs 3,080 crore. The Board has a lot of clout in the Cricket Governing Body and Asia because it has been a cricketing and administrative powerhouse over the years.

There have been recent reports that the Indian Cricket Board, Cricket Australia, and the England Cricket Board are planning to collaborate on a Champions League T20 tournament for women. The Women’s IPL was also recently launched in India and the first season was a grand success. In Australia, the Women’s Big Bash League is one of the most lucrative T20 leagues around the world. For England, the Women’s Hundred tournament has drawn a lot of crowds.
