Rachin Ravindra had a great World Cup campaign and will now be looking to do well in the longest format as well

Rachin Ravindra, a promising young cricketer from New Zealand, burst in the international scene in 2021, making his debut in both T20 International and Test cricket. While his talent was undeniable, he struggled to maintain consistency and turn it into impactful performances. However, 2023 has marked a turning point for Ravindra, as he has emerged as a formidable force in the ODI format. His debut in March this year heralded the beginning of a remarkable journey, with his exceptional performances captivating the cricketing world.

Across 22 ODIs this year, he has amassed an impressive 765 runs, averaging 45.11 and striking at a brisk 107.72. These statistics, while commendable, pale in comparison to his exceptional performances in the recently concluded ODI World Cup.

During the World Cup, Ravindra transformed into an unstoppable force, amassing a staggering 578 runs in just 10 innings. His remarkable average of 64.22, coupled with an outstanding strike-rate of 106.44, speaks volumes about his impact on the tournament. His three centuries and two half-centuries not only propelled New Zealand’s campaign but also shattered multiple records, cementing his status as one of the most promising young cricketers in the world.

“Pretty surreal; playing a game you love is pretty special”

Rachin Ravindra, reflecting on his recent cricketing exploits, expressed his awe at the extraordinary turn of events that has transformed his life. In an interview with ESPN Cricinfo, he acknowledged his immense fortune to be traversing the globe, pursuing his passion for the sport he holds dear.

“Pretty surreal; things have happened quite quickly, and I am very fortunate to be here right now. At my age, being able to travel around the world playing cricket—playing a game you love—for a living is pretty special. It definitely has its ups and downs, but mostly I love every single moment,” he said.

Eager to continue his impressive form, Rachin Ravindra will embark on a two-match Test series against Bangladesh, commencing on November 28 in Sylhet. The transition from ODIs to Tests, Ravindra believes, is a change that he loves as it keeps his intent on the higher side.

“I enjoy going back to red-ball cricket after that (ODIs), because that means your intent… You are almost looking to score, so, I mean, (it) keeps you in a good position to score, but probably here (in Bangladesh) it depends on the conditions and what the pitch is doing; it’s probably going to dial that back a little bit, not as many risks. You can still play your natural game by understanding the surface and the situation of the game,” he added.
