Bangladesh defeated New Zealand by 150 runs in the first Test in Sylhet

Bangladesh defeated New Zealand by a significant margin of 150 runs in the first Test out of the two-match series in Sylhet, taking a 1-0 lead. This was only the second time in Test cricket history that Bangladesh had defeated New Zealand.

Bangladesh, after winning the toss, chose to bat first and put up a commanding 310 runs on the board in the first innings. Mahmadul Hasan Joy was the star of the show for the hosts, scoring a well-compiled 86 runs. For New Zealand, Glenn Phillips was the most effective bowler, taking four wickets for 53 runs. In reply, New Zealand mounted a strong challenge, thanks to a magnificent century by former captain Kane Williamson. Williamson scored 104 runs, his 29th in Test cricket, guiding his team to a score of 317 runs. Taijul Islam and Mominul Haque were the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh, taking four and three wickets respectively.

Skipper Najmal Hossain Shanto led way to Bangladesh’s victory

Bangladesh amassed a formidable 338 runs in their second essay, setting New Zealand a daunting target of 332. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto led the way with a superb century, while Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz chipped in with valuable half-centuries. Ajaz Patel claimed four wickets, but New Zealand’s bowling attack failed to exert sustained pressure. The chase was always going to be an uphill battle, but few anticipated New Zealand capitulating for a mere 181, handing Bangladesh a comprehensive 150-run victory. Taijul Islam stood out as the wrecker-in-chief, snaring six wickets to finish with a match tally of 10, earning him the well-deserved player-of-the-match award.

The second Test of the series will be held in Dhaka and will commence on Wednesday, December 6. It will be a tough task for the visitors to stage a comeback but being a proud cricketing nation, they will look to come back all guns blazing.
