ODI World Cup 2023

Ramiz Raja asks for improved captaincy from Babar Azam

Babar Azam was criticized by many for his captaincy.

Babar Azam’s captaincy has been receiving a lot of criticism from fans, former players, and experts after the loss of Pakistan against Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup 2023. Many have asked him to step down from the captaincy after the loss. Ramiz Raja, the former chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board, has also criticized the captaincy of Babar. Ramiz said that Pakistan has a lot of problems.

“Pakistan have a lot of problems to deal with. Babar Azam needs to improve a lot tactically. Hasan Ali was getting the ball to reverse towards the back end of the innings. The equation was run-a-ball at that stage. Pakistan needed wickets, and Hasan looked very close to getting a dismissal. What was the need to bowl a spinner from the other end?” said Raja.

The former chairman of the Pakistan cricket board questioned some of the decisions of Babar in the tournament. Ramiz pointed out factors like not rotating the bowlers well, tactical misjudgments, choice of bowlers, and so on. Raja felt that Babar’s captaincy could have been better in the match. Ramiz felt that Pakistan might need an overhaul after the 2023 ODI World Cup.

‘We need to improve on each and every aspect’ – Ramiz Raja

“After this World Cup, there has to be a serious discussion about altering the DNA of this team. They need a complete overhaul in terms of mindset, approach, new talent, and new ideas. We need to improve on each and every aspect. Pakistan have hit rock bottom. Babar Azam needs to step up and prove himself as a leader amid all this,” added the former chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Ramiz expressed that Babar was disappointed with the loss against Afghanistan. “It was a massive disaster for Pakistan in this World Cup. Losing to Afghanistan will hurt badly. The disappointment was writ large on Babar Azam’s face when I interviewed him… Pakistan have never dealt with a surprising defeat like this one before,” concluded Raja, who felt that Pakistan has not faced situations like they are now in the ODI World Cup 2023.
