Qualification scenario for fourth spot in semifinal of ODI World Cup 2023

India, South Africa, and Australia have qualified for the semifinal.

The group stage of the ODI World Cup 2023 is coming to an end. So far, there have been many high-scoring games in the tournament and some of the matches saw great performances from both teams. The matches have seen excellent individual performances, particularly from the batters. Many records are being broken in the tournament and has given a lot of memories to the fans.

The focus now shifts towards the qualification scenario for the semifinal of the tournament. India, South Africa, and Australia have already qualified for the knockouts. South Africa and Australia are set to face each other in the semifinal. New Zealand are the most likely contender to take up the final spot owing to their healthy net-run rate.

Pakistan, currently playing against England at the Eden Gardens have a marginal chance of displacing the Kiwis. However, they will need to produce a miracle for that to happen.

Qualification scenario for Pakistan

Under ideal circumstances, Pakistan would have preferred to bat first and set a challenging target for England. However, their hopes were dashed when they lost the toss, and England captain Jos Buttler opted to bat first. This decision further complicated Pakistan’s already daunting task of qualifying for the semifinals.

England have already scored over 100 runs and it seems like they will post a score in excess of 300. Now if Pakistan manage to restrict England to 150, they will need to complete the chase in 3.4 overs. If England score 200, Pakistan will need to win in 4.3 overs and if the former scored 300, the target must be achieved in 6.1 overs. These scenarios are absolutely unimaginable and so, Pakistan’s campaign is as good as over.

However, with pride at stake, they will look to bow out of the tournament on a high. England, on the other hand, will be desperate for a win to ensure qualification to the 2025 Champions Trophy.
