India and the Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh team faced off in the second Test that kicked off on December 22, Thursday and the Indian camp clinched an emphatic win on Sunday with 3 wickets to spare, chasing a target of 145, on the back of an unbeaten 42 and 29 from Ravichandran Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer respectively.
Heaping praise on Ashwin for his valiant innings, the former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, claimed that it was one of the best innings from the allrounder for team India. Further, the legendary cricketer said the pressure that the veteran spinner might have faced could have been immense pressure as India were restricted 74/7.
Further, Gavaskar claimed that Ashwin has grown up in stature, over a period of time and notably, the Indian allrounder proved his prowess against the mighty Bangla Tigers, although one could argue Iyer played a huge role in clinching the historic win. Further, the former Indian cricketer claimed that the allrounder played a handy inning, joining hands with Iyer, given that the Indian team were in desperate need of such a partnership.
“They both look utterly calm there. The tension must have been unbelievable out there. But somebody like Ashwin; he has been a fantastic cricketer. People only talk about his bowling but he has got five hundreds and he showed how he got those. Terrific innings from him and a great partnership with Shreyas Iyer,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying to Sony Sports Network.
“They took their scoring opportunities. They were not afraid of playing their shots, with Iyer in particular. That lofted shot over extra cover was brilliantly executed, forcing the bowler to bowl a little bit short,” said the former Indian cricketer further. The Indian team have a hectic home season coming as they will take on the likes of Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia in quick succession. However, the Border-Gavaskar trophy against Australia in March 2023 will be the pinnacle of all, given that India are the current holders of the trophy.
