Mithali Raj has been a torchbearer of women’s cricket for decades. She had a long career spanning from 1999 to 2022. She played 232 ODIs and scored 7,805 runs at an average of 50.68. She has 64 half-centuries and seven centuries to her name. She has a highest individual score of an unbeaten 125 to her name in the format.
According to reports, Mithali will come out of retirement to play in the Women’s Indian T20 League. The sizzling right-handed batter had bid adieu to the game in June 2022, but she did not rule out coming out of retirement and playing the women’s Indian T20 league. If this indeed happens then it will be a boon to women’s cricket as viewership will rise with her presence in the league.
“I’m keeping that option open. I’ve not yet decided. There are a few more months to go before the women’s Indian T20 League happens. It would be lovely to be part of the first edition of the women’s Indian T20 League. She had said on the 100% Cricket Podcast in an interaction with former fast bowler Isha Guha and ex-New Zealand off spinner Frankie Mackay. This was the first time she talked about coming out of retirement.
Just recently, Viacom 18 secured the broadcast rights for the Women’s Indian T20 League. The rights were bought for a five-year cycle from 2023-2027. The rights were bought at a handsome margin of INR 951 crore. The per match value of the tournament will be 7.09 crore over the next five years. Sourav Ganguly former Indian Cricket Board President had said that the tournament is likely to be held in 2023.
“The Women’s Indian T20 League will be a game-changer for women’s cricket and cricket in general. This development represents a significant milestone in that regard. Looking forward to an outstanding tournament. Mithali had tweeted on the record broadcast rights deal. “This is so heartening and a testimony to the credibility and growth of Women’s Cricket. Am so delighted. Jhulan Goswami wrote on Twitter.
The Women’s Indian T20 League will likely consist of 22 matches. It will take place between March 5 and March 23. Overseas players will also take part in the league. It will mostly be a five Team tournament with squads having a maximum of 18 players with a maximum of six players being overseas.
Let us take a look at the reactions on Twitter:
Thank god she is back in to playing …. Cricket needs her batting more than her commentary

Why are people trolling @M_Raj03
Teams will pay her, she will earn her pay
As a fan I am so happy the best ever will grace WIPL
Its like Sachin Tendulkar gracing IPL if it were introduced in 2012

Good decision by her. Women's IPL is revolutionary change in Women's cricket all over the globe and Mithali Raj is one of the greatest and it would have been unfair if she wouldn't take part on it.

PSA: Mithali Raj only announced her international retirement. Not from all forms of the game. So she won't have to 'come out of retirement' for the women's IPL.
She has made it clear that league cricket is still something she very much wants to do, no? #WIPL
