Javagal Srinath, known as the Mysore Express, has turned 54 today. The great fast bowler from Mysore was the fastest Indian bowler till Umran Malik arrived at the scene. To date, India has not produced a faster bowler than the right-arm quick bowler, who played consistently for India for more than 10 years. Srinath was a great bowler in the 1990s, especially in ODIs.

Srinath played a total of 296 matches in international cricket and claimed 551 wickets for India. In Test cricket, Srinath played 67 matches and claimed 236 wickets at a bowling average of 30.49, a bowling strike rate of 64.00, and an economy of 2.86, including ten 5-wicket hauls. Srinath claimed the best match figures of 13/132 in a Test match.

8/68 against South Africa from the pacer in Test cricket remains one of the best spells by an Indian bowler in Test cricket. In the longest format of the game, Srinath was like a lone warrior for India for a long time, especially in the overseas conditions. Despite being a tearaway fast bowler, Srinath played for India without many injuries for a long time. It was during the early 2000s that the fast bowler sustained an injury.

A great fast bowler in One Day Internationals

ODIs were the best format for Srinath. In 229 matches in the format, Srinath claimed 315 wickets, at a bowling average of 28.09, a bowling strike rate of 37.89, at an economy of 4.45, including three 5-wicket hauls. Srinath had a best match figure of 5/23 in the then shorter format of the game. Srinath was a handy batter too, especially in ODIs, where he stuck some crucial blows.

Apart from being a successful cricketer, Srinath is also known as a great match referee. As terrifying as he was as a bowler, Srinath was a perfect gentleman of the game and was always to his game. Srinath is regarded as the best Indian pacer by many. In ODIs, the quick bowler has the most wickets by an Indian fast bowler.
