Australia have inflicted a 3-0 whitewash on Pakistan after having won the 3rd and final Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 6. The Number One ranked team won the game by 8 wickets to complete what has been a sensational run, having earlier beaten Pakistan in Perth and Melbourne.

The day started with Pakistan’s score being 68-7, leading the Aussies by 82 runs. The visitors could only manage to add 47 more runs to their total as Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins claimed the remaining three wickets in quick succession. This meant that the Aussies required 130 runs to win the game and end the series 3-0.

Australia lost their prolific opener, Usman Khawaja in the very first over to Sajid Khan but the retiring David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne put on a 119-run stand to ensure that there were no further hiccups and that the hosts coasted along. Warner was dismissed on 57 and he received a standing ovation on his way back for what has been a remarkable career. His last innings was a tribute to his flamboyant and fearless style as he played some audacious shots to end with a strike rate of 84.93. Labuschagne stayed unbeaten on 62, hitting the winning runs in the 26th over bowled by the impressive Aamer Jamal.

Aamer Jamal was declared the Player-of-the-Match for his brilliant 89 in the first innings which was coupled with a superb six-wicket haul. This was a deserving consolation for Jamal who was brilliant right throughout the series, emerging as one of the bright spots for Pakistan in what was a tough series for them. Pat Cummins won the award for the Player-of-the-Series for picking up 19 wickets over the course of the 3 games. His captaincy was also spot on as evident from the fact that the team reached the Numero Uno rank in Tests.

“Everything seemed to work”

Speaking to the official broadcaster after the game, Cummins said that ‘everything seemed to work out well’ for the Aussies during the series. He acknowledged the fact that the team was challenged at times but credited his players for regularly finding ways to make stunning comebacks. “Everything seemed to work this summer. A couple of moments where we fell right behind it, but one of the boys stepped up and found a way to get us back into the contest. It’s a great start to the summer so far,” he said.

The Aussies will now take a short break before they assemble again for a 2-match Test series against the West Indies which will kick off on January 17 at the Adelaide Oval. The second game will be played at the Gabba in Brisbane.
