All records broken by Virat Kohli in the semi-final against New Zealand

Kohli's record breaking innings has taken India into their first World Cup Final since 2011.

On Wednesday, Indian cricket witnessed an epoch-defining moment as Virat Kohli, one of its most illustrious players, further solidified his status as one of the game’s all-time greats. At the hallowed Wankhede Stadium, Kohli surpassed his boyhood hero, Sachin Tendulkar, to become the first man in history to achieve the unparalleled feat of 50 ODI centuries. This extraordinary accomplishment stands as an indelible mark of Kohli’s unwavering dedication, exceptional talent, and unyielding passion for cricket.

The electrifying atmosphere of a home World Cup semi-final, amplified by the roar of a passionate crowd and the presence of legendary figures like Sachin Tendulkar, Viv Richards, and David Beckham, made the occasion an indelible memory.

Throughout his magical innings, Kohli broke several records as he’s done over the last decade and more.

Here’s a look at all Virat’s records

The obvious one

As mentioned earlier, he became the first cricketer to score 50 centuries in the ODI format. Before this milestone, he was tied with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar at 49 centuries. His century yesterday elevated him to a pinnacle unmatched by any other player in the history of the game.

Most fifty-plus scores in a single World Cup edition

Kohli has batted 10 times in this World Cup, scoring three centuries and five half-centuries which means that he has eight fifty-plus scores to his name. This remarkable feat surpasses the previous record of seven fifty-plus scores held by legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who achieved it in the 2003 World Cup. Kohli’s consistent brilliance has been instrumental in India’s dominant campaign, showcasing his exceptional talent and unwavering determination on the global stage.

Most runs in a single World Cup edition

On the day, Kohli shattered another Sachin Tendulkar record from the 2003 World Cup. In the 2003 edition, Tendulkar had scored 673 runs which until yesterday was the most by an individual in a single edition of the World Cup. Kohli has already scored 711 runs in this edition and still has a game left. Sachin’s record was broken after two decades and hence, Kohli’s remarkable feat is likely to remain unchallenged for many years to come.

3rd most runs in ODI history

Before yesterday’s match, Virat Kohli stood on the brink of surpassing Ricky Ponting, the third-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket history. With a tally of 13,677 runs, Kohli was just 27 runs shy of Ponting’s 13,704 runs. During his scintillating innings at the Wankhede Stadium, Kohli not only erased the deficit but also surpassed Ponting to become the third-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket history.

3rd most centuries by an Indian in World Cup history

Kohli scored one hundred in 2011, one in 2015 and has already scored 3 in this edition which means that he has five World Cup centuries in all. Only Rohit Sharma (7) and Sachin Tendulkar have more World Cup tons than Kohli.

3rd Most centuries for India in a single World Cup edition

Kohli is now second on the list of Indians with the most centuries in a single edition of the World Cup, having notched up three this time around. His distinguished achievement places him alongside the legendary Sourav Ganguly, who also scored three centuries in the 2003 World Cup. While Rohit Sharma remains the undisputed king of World Cup centuries with his five tons in 2019.
