In a big blow to India’s ambitions, senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh. The 32-year-old has, reportedly, picked up a hand injury during the training session and, thus, would be missing the upcoming ODIs. Moreover, his availability for the two Tests is also under the scanner.

“Fast bowler Mohammed Shami sustained a shoulder injury during a training session in the lead up to the ODI series against Bangladesh,” said BCCI in a press release.

“He is currently under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team at the NCA, Bengaluru and will not be able to take part in the three-match series.”

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Umran Malik as Shami’s replacement.”
Mohammed Shami last played for India at the 20-20 World Cup in 2022. In 6 matches, he picked 6 wickets at an economy of 7.15. With Bumrah not in the side, his unavailability could prove costly to the team.

Meanwhile, young Indian fast bowler, Umran Malik has been announced as Shami’s replacement in the ODI series. Malik, recently, made his ODI debut in the series against New Zealand. He consistently bowled at over 145 clicks and also picked 3 wickets.

He has also played 3 T20 internationals and has bagged 2 wickets at an average of 12.44. The 23-year-old fast bowler would be looking to make the most of the opportunity and make a mark in the series.

Shami’s unavailability in the Test series could be an even bigger headache for the Indian team. He is one of the vital cogs in the Test team and with Bumrah also not available, India could be in little trouble.

For India to reach the final of the World Test Championship, they need to win all their remaining Test matches.
