Former Australian skipper, Michael Clarke has dropped a big statement with regard to handing over Australia’s captaincy duties to David Warner. The right-handed batsman has opined that David Warner must not be in contention to be the captain for the next game against West Indies.

Pat Cummins is battling injury ahead of the second Test match and there have been speculations on appointing David Warner as the skipper of the Australian Test team. There is no dedicated vice-captain in the Test team as of now, which makes David Warner a possible candidate for the same.

Talking to Yahoo Sports Australia, Michael Clarke said that appointing David Warner as the captain for the Test match would be nothing but a public relations exercise. The former skipper reasoned that David Warner is already 36 and must not be handed the captaincy.

“Tactically, Davey is very good. I’ve seen him do the IPL and he’s been brilliant, one of the best, but at 36, I’d be very surprised if they were that way. I think they’ve made it pretty clear what they feel. If you’re fighting for Davey to be captain, it’s for marketing reasons.” Clarke said.

Michael Clarke had a glorious career for Cricket Australia with 36 centuries to his name across all formats. The New South Wales born retired in 2015 from both Test and One-Day International formats in six months.

The 41-year-old opined that Cricket Australia should promote youngsters from the domestic circuit and get experience. Besides, he was also of the opinion that the leadership pipeline should be built from domestic circuit too.

“We should promote young people as much as we can. We need to find leadership in our domestic cricket. There should be five, six, seven players who are in a position to take a leadership role if it comes up. I’m not sure if we’re working hard enough on it or if we see the importance of it.”

Australia will lock horns with West Indies at Adelaide Oval in the second and final Test match on 8th December (Thursday). Australia, currently, lead the series 1-0.
