Chennai skipper MS Dhoni has crossed 5000 runs in his Indian T20 League career after he smashed Mark Wood for back-to-back sixes in the final over of the first innings in the ongoing match between Chennnai and Lucknow at the Chepauk stadium. Chennai went on to post a mammoth total in their second game of the 2023 season after losing the first match against Gujarat.

Chennai were 203 for in 19.1 overs before Dhoni comes to bat. The crowd present in the stadium went berserk when Dhoni started to walk toward the crease. The 41-year-old didn’t disappoint the fans as he hit a six on the very first ball he faced by slicing the ball over the deep backward point that was bowled short outside off stump by Mark Wood. On the very next delivery, Dhoni pulled another short ball over a deep square for a huge six.

On the next ball, Dhoni again hit the balls high in the air but it wasn’t enough to clear the fence and Ravi Bishnoi was there to take the catch as Dhoni’s entertaining cameo come to an end. Dhoni now has scored 5004 runs in 236 matches in the Indian T20 League, at an average of 39.09 and a strike rate of 135.54, including 24 half-centuries.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway laid the foundation for a big total

Batting first, Chennai got a firing start as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway put up a partnership of 110 runs in 9.1 overs. Conway got out after scoring 47 runs off 29 balls with five fours and two sixes, while Gaikwad went on to score his second consecutive half-century of the season as got out after smashing 57 runs off 31 balls hitting three four and four sixes.

After that, Shivam Dubey also produced some big hits as he got out after scoring 27 off 16 balls, including one four and three sixes. Rayudu remained unbeaten on 27 off 14 with two fours and two sixes as Chennai posted a total of 217 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Mark Wood and Ravi Bishnoi took 3-3 wickets each for Lucknow, while Avesh Khan put 1 in his bag.

However, Lucknow also got a great start while chasing 218 runs as they scored 80 runs in the first six overs for the loss of 1 wicket. Kyle Mayers continued his great form but he got out after smashing 53 runs off 22 balls.
