Having given a lifeline by the Netherlands, Pakistan defeated Bangladesh in their do-or-die match and made a late entry to the semi-final of 20-20 World Cup. In their semi-final match, they went against New Zealand on November 9th at Sydney Cricket Stadium.
After winning the toss Kane Williamson chose to bat against the Men in Green. Coming onto set a target the Kiwis started off poorly as they lost their first wicket in Finn Allen in the very first over itself. Shaheen Afridi who has found form at just the right time after being wicketless for the first two matches dismissed the Kiwi batter on 3rd ball itself.
Wicket-keeper Devon Convoy and captain Kane Williamson formed an important partnership in the middle but Convoy gave way to another wicket at 38. A 46 from Williamson and a late blitz from Daryl Mitchell (53) took New Zealand to 152/4 in 20 overs. Afridi with 2 wickets in 4 overs at an economy of just 6 came out as Pakistan’s best bowler.
Coming onto chase what was a tricky total, Pakistan’s openers Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam who had struggled throughout the tournament started off in a different manner altogether. The two right-hand batters thwarted all New Zealand’s challenge to 105 runs partnership for the first wicket.
Some heart-in-the-mouth moments came then after but Mohammad Haris and Shan Masood made sure to take Pakistan across the finish line and be the first team to book a berth in the final in the 20-20 World Cup.
The Men in Green won the match by a huge 7 wickets with five balls to spare and as a result, New Zealand have failed in the semi-final stage yet again. Pakistan will not play against the winner of the India vs England match.
