India’s star batter KL Rahul, who took up the pivotal batting position of No.4 which was previously held by Virat Kohli, demonstrated his class and patience with a gritty fifty in his 50th Test match. Rahul’s skill was on full display as he scored a resolute half-century, leading India to a commanding lead in the first session of Day 2 of the first Test.

At the start of the Day 2 Joe Root took the ball in his hand and took the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the 1st over itself. Rahul, who had a close shave on the following delivery thanks to a chance lost by wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, capitalized on the reprieve to steady the Indian innings. Shubman Gill on the other end established his rhythm and eventually fell to Tom Hartley, earning the spinner his first Test wicket.

KL Rahul exhibited technical accuracy against both spin and fast bowling

A century against South Africa in 1st Test match in Centurion boosted the confidence of Rahul. Despite the difficult circumstances at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, which differed dramatically from SuperSport Park, and with England’s spinners getting into a better rhythm, Rahul exhibited technical accuracy against both spin and pace. His consistency helped India score 103 runs at a rate of 3.81 runs per over.

Rahul’s improvisational skills shined through as he paddle-pulled Wood for a four behind square leg. After that, he scored his 14th Test fifty with a single off Joe Root. Shreyas Iyer joined Rahul at the crease, and England’s pace attack, led by Mark Wood, increased the pressure. Despite Wood’s testing spell, Iyer settled in, notably against England’s spinners. Rahul and Iyer formed a strong partnership, with Rahul reaching 50 and Iyer contributing vital runs.

Scoring 103 runs from 27 overs at two wickets loss India had a good session. Rahul and Iyer’s partnership not only steadied the ship following Jaiswal’s early loss but also provided a platform for India to push for a significant first-innings total. Their goal would be clear: to bat deep, build a huge lead, and potentially bat England out of the game, utilizing the advantage they had fought so hard to gain.
