Prakhar Chaturvedi, a young batter from Karnataka, created history today as he became the first ever player to smash a quadruple century in the Final of the Cooch Behar Trophy, which is the biggest multi-day tournament for U-19 players. Chaturvedi got to the landmark against Mumbai at the KSCA Navule Stadium in Shivamogga.
His achievement meant that Yuvraj Singh’s long-standing record score (358) in a final, was finally broken after 25 years. Yuvraj’s 358 came in 1999 when Punjab beat Bihar at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur. Bihar had made 357 in the first innings following which, Punjab, riding on Yuvraj’s magnificent effort, piled up a total of 839.

Coming back to today’s game, Chaturvedi’s unbeaten 404 helped Karnataka post a total of 890 in response to Mumbai’s score of 380. As such, Karnataka won the game based on the first-inning lead. During his innings, Chaturvedi shared big partnerships with four other batters. He shared a century stand with fellow opener, Karthik SU and then a 290-run alliance with Harshil Dharmani. He then shared crucial stands with Karthikeya KP and Hardik Raj. The innings was declared as soon as Chaturvedi got to his quadruple century and in the process, the match was also done and dusted.
Overall, Chaturvedi’s effort takes him to 2nd spot on the list of highest individual scores in the history of the tournament with Vijay Zol’s 451 not out in 2011 being right on top.

Junior Dravid chips in

Former India batter and current head coach, Rahul Dravid‘s son, Samit Dravid was also part of the Karnataka lineup. He put in some vital contributions right throughout the tournament but didn’t have a huge impact on the Final. Still, his two wickets in the first innings were handy as they were both set batters with one of them playing on 73. He bowled with control and the other bowlers were able to reap the benefits of his hard work.

While batting, he scored 22 with the help of 1 six and 2 boundaries and that didn’t cause his team too much harm as Chaturvedi played a once-in-a-lifetime innings.
