England Test captain Ben Stokes has decided to pull out of the upcoming Indian Premier League season. The all-rounder, who was bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for a whopping Rs 16.25 crore in the 2023 auction, has cited workload management and fitness concerns as the reasons for his decision.

Stokes’ withdrawal is a significant blow to CSK, who were hoping to rely on the experienced campaigner’s all-round skills to bolster their squad. The 32-year-old could only play 2 games for the 5-time champions before being sidelined due to a knee injury. He could only score 15 runs in the two games that he played.

Ben Stokes has pulled out of next year’s IPL citing workload management.

The decision to withdraw from the IPL 2024 is likely to be seen as a wise one by Stokes, given his demanding schedule as England’s Test captain. The upcoming season is set to be a busy one for the national team, with a 5 match Test series against India scheduled for January and February. There is also a T20 World Cup in June in which England will start as defending champions. “I will hopefully be fine for the Test series. I am having surgery after the World Cup. There was a lot of time put into deciding when to get it done. The India Test series, which we start at the end of January, I should be fine to go by then,” he had said during the World Cup.

Despite the setback, CSK will still have a formidable squad for the IPL 2024 season. It will now be interesting to see whether CSK retain him for the future or release him for now. For now, they have supported Stokes’ decision to prioritize his fitness.  “The Chennai Super Kings management is supportive of Ben in his decision to manage his workload with England playing a 5-Test series in India before the IPL and then the T20 World Cup in June 2024,” an official statement from CSK said.
