Jay Shah, has been accused by World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga of ‘running’ and ‘ruining’ Sri Lankan cricket (SLC). Days after SLC was suspended by the apex cricket council for failing to “manage its affairs autonomously,” Ranatunga made her remarks. Prior to it, a motion urging the dismissal of the “allegedly corrupt SLC management” was unanimously approved by the Sri Lankan parliament. It was deemed political meddling by the cricket’s top governing body.

After being quoted by Daily Mirror, “Because of the connection between SLC officials and Jay Shah they (the Indian Cricket Board) are under the impression that they can trample and control SLC.”

He added, “Because of the connection between SLC officials and Jay Shah they (the BCCI) are under the impression that they can trample and control SLC.”

Ranatunga has experienced the most turbulent period in the SLC’s history. A few weeks prior, the former captain was named as the chairman of an interim organising committee. This was announced by the nation’s sports minister, Roshan Ranasinghe, who also fired the SLC staff.

The Court of Appeal in Sri Lanka overturned the ruling and reinstated the officers while it conducted more investigation. The resolution indicated earlier was subsequently approved by the parliament by the government.

For the time being, the top governing body’s action is merely being viewed as a warning. The SLC staff, which appears to have the support of the apex cricket council. But is experiencing pressure from the government, was said to have submitted the request for a suspension.

“This is the best time to clean this up” : Arjun Ranatunga

Ranatunga demanded a probe into the entire incident in order to identify those who had “betrayed” Sri Lanka. This happened in a conversation with Ada Derana.

He said, “We should investigate how we ended up here and expose everyone responsible for leading us here. If there’s a system that allows someone to betray the entire country for self-protection, the President should take tough decisions by conduction proper investigations. This is the best time to clean this up.”
