It has been a wonderful week for India’s supremely talented opening batter, Shubman Gill as on Monday, he was elevated to the position of captain of his IPL team, the Gujarat Titans. This momentous occasion follows the departure of the previous captain, Hardik Pandya, who joined the Mumbai Indians through a trade deal.
In his first comments since being named captain, the 24-year-old acknowledged the magnitude of the appointment which is still settling in, describing it as a dream come true. “It’s going to take time. Probably till the time we don’t play the first match, it’s not going to quite sink in. It’s a great feeling. Obviously, it’s a dream for any kid who wants to be a cricketer and who wants to play in the IPL to be able to captain a team. It feels amazing,” Gill said.
Despite his evident enthusiasm, Gill recognized the challenges that lie ahead, emphasizing the need for discipline, commitment, and unwavering effort. “We all know captainship comes with a lot of things and commitment is one of them, discipline is one of them, hard work is one of them, and loyalty is one of them. And because I have played under great leaders and I have learnt a lot from them, I think those learnings that I have had from their experience playing under them will help me a lot in this IPL”, he said.
Gill has undoubtedly been handed a significant responsibility as he takes over the reins of a team that has quickly established itself as a formidable force in the Indian Premier League. The Titans made a grand entrance into the IPL in 2022, capturing the coveted championship title in their debut season. Their momentum continued in 2023, as they reached the IPL finals, falling just short of victory in a thrilling match that went down to the wire.
However, given his composed temperament, pundits opine that Gill’s transition into captaincy will be natural and fluid.
