The next big assignment which is coming up for India is the 2023 One-Day World Cup. The tournament will be held on home soil for the first time since 2011. But unlike then, the whole tournament will be taking place in India. Rohit Sharma is currently leading the national side in all formats. After the world cup finishes, India might see a change of hands.

Speaking on this matter, Ravi Shastri has suggested that Hardik Pandya should entirely take over the reins regarding the white ball side after the 50-over World Cup is over. Pandya has improved leaps and bounds as a cricketer since he took over the captaincy role at the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) edition. He guided GT to its maiden title in that edition. Even in 2023, GT made it to the final under his leadership but lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a high-voltage clash.

The seniors are ready to be phased out and replaced by youngsters -Ravi Shastri

“After the World Cup, if his body is fit enough, he should take over the captaincy in white-ball cricket,” Shastri said in an interview with The Week. Hardik also led India recently in a T20I series against Sri Lanka at home, where India won the T20I series 2-1  and also against New Zealand, where India took the T20I series 2-1.  On another note, many former cricketers batted for Hardik Pandya’s return to red-ball cricket as he could bring more depth and balance to the National side.

But Shastri had differing views on this topic. “His body cannot cope with Test cricket. Let’s be very clear about that,” Shastri added. The former India cricketer talked about the Indian Team and said that the time is ripe for integrating the youngsters into the Indian side and slowly phasing the senior players out.

“There are seniors ready to be phased out and there are youngsters ready,” Shastri added. “No question about it when it comes to T20 cricket. Lesser in 50-over cricket and even fewer in Tests,” Shastri further elucidated. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal were included in the West Indies Tests.
