Ishan Kishan spent most of this season’s Indian T20 League under the massive weight of his auction price tag. Unfortunately, his performance in this edition was not up to the mark. So a place in the team against South Africa was a massive opportunity, and the youngster took it with both hands. He scored a brilliant 76 in the first match. He looked really confident throughout his innings.
The quickfire half-century comes as a huge sigh of relief to many Indian fans. Although Ishan’s knock was not enough to win India the match, it came as a huge confidence booster for him. He now believes that his performance would dictate his place in the team and he would not ask for a spot otherwise.
Speaking about his performance and the battle for an opening spot in the Indian team, Kishan said, “I think they (Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul) are world-class players and I won’t ask for my support when they are there in the team. So my job here is to give my best in the practice session. Whenever I get my opportunity, I have to prove myself or do well for the team. So I focus more than that about my process about what I have to do here.”
The 23-year-old said he wouldn’t ask for a place in the team ahead of Rohit and Rahul. He iterated, “They have done so much. You know, scored so many runs for our country. I can’t ask them to drop them and make me play in the first place. Yeah I’ll keep doing my thing it’s up to selectors or other coaches whatever they think but my job is to you know just whenever I get my chance I will give my best.”
India lost the first T20 against South Africa despite making a big total. Kishan however refused to blame the bowlers and insisted, “We’ll figure out everything as a team.”
