Is this new marketing tactic? Virender Sehwag calls out McDonald’s India for calling him ‘Vasu’ instead of ‘Viru’

Virender Sehwag has had an incredible cricketing career. Known for his aggressive batting in a time when playing sensibly was the norm. Due to his fearless brand of cricket, Sehwag enjoyed a great deal of fame and he still enjoys it quite a lot.

This fame and popularity bring in a lot of money in terms of endorsements and brand deals. Even a mere Tweet earns famous cricketers lakhs or even crores of Rupees. Just check the brand endorsements of popular players like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.

Sehwag also has a number of brand deals and endorsements that he makes. One such deal that is gone a little haywire is with the fast food company McDonald’s. On Wednesday, 4th January, Sehwag tweeted a screenshot of McDonald’s website with one section showing his picture and the caption, “Vasu’s favourite coming soon.”

Sehwag seems to have irritated that his nickname, Viru, seems to have been incorrectly written as Vasu’s on the McDonald’s home page. He tweeted the picture along with a caption, “My name is Virender Sehwag,” in full capital letters tagging “@mcdonaldsindia and with hashtag #WhatsHappening.

Soon however other brands also began replying to Sehwag’s Tweet in hopes of bringing traffic to their account. Pages like slice, Reliance Jio, Sodexo India, Go Mechanic, and others tweeted jokes and memes in the reply sections.

Other users however were not very amused by the Tweet. One user by the name OxMahakal wrote, “You just lost a bit of respect, sir.”

Another by the name Rohan Kale said, “Surprised a sportsperson such as urself is promoting junk food.” Ravinder Bhardwaj said, “So you’re promoting KFC. I thought you were different than the other celebrities who can sponsor even poison for a money.”
