Team India opener Shikhar Dhawan will lead India in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, starting 6th October 2022. As per reports, the captaincy will be handed over to Shikhar Dhawan as 20-20 World Cup 2022 participating players are likely to be rested.
The eighth edition of the 20-20 World Cup is set to take place from October 16th to November 13th this year where Australia are the hosts. VVS Laxman is likely to be with the team as the coach in the absence of head coach Rahul Dravid, the Indian Cricket Board officials added.
India are scheduled to play three T20Is and ODIs each against South Africa, starting September 28th. The first T20I will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on September 28th. The second T20I will be played on October 2nd, 2022, followed by the last T20I at Indore on October 4th.
After the T20s, the ODIs will be held. The 1st ODI will be held in Lucknow on 6th October. Ranchi and Delhi will play host to the second and third ODI on October 9th and 11th respectively. The Rohit Sharma led side will leave for Australia on October 9th or 10th.
The early departure will help in getting used to the Australian conditions and time zones. India will begin with intra-squad practice matches before the warm-up games take place. Rahul Tripathi is expected to make his debut in the series, while young pace sensation Umran Malik could also make a comeback for the ODI series after making his debut against Ireland earlier this year.
Shikar Dhawan is now purely looked as an ODI player and has been in top form in the format, averaging 51.85 from 9 ODIs in 2022. He has scored 363 runs from 9 matches this season. Overall, in 158 ODIs, Dhawan has amassed 6,647 runs with 17 hundreds and 38 fifties at an average of 45.84.
