India and Australia are playing the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 at Nagpur. India were slightly handicapped in the middle-order coming into this Test as Shreyas Iyer was ruled out due to a back injury and Rishabh Pant had not recovered from the horrific accident that he suffered in December 2022.

Hence, KS Bharat replaced Rishabh Pant as the wicketkeeper of the Indian side. Also, to replace Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav was handed his debut cap. When Bharat was presented with his Test cap from former India coach Ravi Shastri, his mother broke into a big hug with Bharat. That adorable picture of the two embracing each other has been doing the rounds on social media.

We have had good preparation going into the Australia series – Rohit Sharma

“Yesterday when we started training we did see some seam movement for the pacers up front. We have had a good prep for the last 5-6 days. We trained on the aspects in store. This is a big one. We know the importance of the series but we also understand it’s about winning one session at a time. It’s a long series. Three spinners, two-seamers, Bharat and Suryakumar Yadav are debuting,” We would have batted too. Looks pretty dry. There will be help for spinners. We got to wait and see how much it does,” Rohit Sharma said at the toss.

Bharat had earlier played in the Indian T20 league for Bangalore in 2021 where he had a good outing. He scored 191 runs in that edition for Bangalore and did well. He also kept wickets for India when they played against New Zealand in Kanpur at home. Bharat did a good job and took some good catches and kept well to the spinners in that game when Wriddhiman Saha had stiffness in his neck.

The Indian Cricket Board also invited the families of Bharat and Suryakumar Yadav to watch the cap-presenting ceremony. Head coach Rahul Dravid also shook hands with the family members of both players.
