On this day, India won the 1983 World Cup at Lords. Kapil Dev’s men conquered the West Indies in a high-octane final in England. Even though India was bowled out for 183 in 60 overs. The Indian bowlers, with an extensive military medium-pace lineup, used the conditions to their advantage and bowled their side to a memorable win of 40 runs after they bowled the Men from the Carribean to 140.

Sunil Gavaskar also talked about the triumph that changed the cricket landscape in India. He also dwelt in detail about Kapil Dev’s innings of 175 against Zimbabwe. Kapil came to the crease when India was in a precarious position at 17-5, and from there, his partnerships with Roger Binny and Syed Kirmani bailed India out of trouble. Kapil played a fantastic knock of an unbeaten 175 off 138 balls with 16 fours and six sixes.

This allowed India to get to 266-8 in their 60 overs. Zimbabwe fell short by 31 runs; from there, it was a massive turnaround for India’s 1983 World Cup campaign. Kapil’s performances with both bat and ball were dazzling, to say the least. Not to forget his catch of Viv Richards in the final. “His captaincy was dynamic, precisely what the format required and his ready smile, even when a player dropped a catch, or mis-fielded, makes him the original Captain Cool. That knock of 175 remains the most remarkable one-day century. I have seen, and I say this with no disrespect to the other match-winning hundreds scored by our boys after that too,” Gavaskar told Times of India.

The 1983 World Cup was the last World Cup which was played in the form of 60 over games. It was also the last time, it was called the Prudential Cup. The win was monumental as it inspired youngsters to take up the sport of cricket in the country, and also the Indian Cricket Board was a different beast after the 1983 World Cup win.
