India’s vice-captain KL Rahul came under heavy scrutiny for not getting good starts in the Asia Cup 2022. There were concerns about his strike rate and people were that he is playing too slowly. He had an Asia Cup that he would like to forget. When he scored a vital half-century at the top against Australia in Mohali, people thought that KL Rahul’s rut in form was over and he will start scoring the big runs again.
But to everyone’s surprise, KL Rahul failed to carry on his form in the last two games in Nagpur and Hyderabad, where he got scores of 10 and 1 which led to people criticizing him again for simply throwing his wicket away. But Sunil Gavaskar has come to the defence of KL Rahul and has given valuable insights on why his low scores do not raise any alarm bells. He also said that the opener will come back to form.
Sunil Gavaskar said that KL Rahul had sacrificed his wicket and he had done so only for the team’s cause. “Well, he was doing what the team was expecting him to do which was both the times, you saw he got a fifty in the first game but in the second game, where he had to throw the bat from the first ball because it was an 8-overs-a-side game, he sacrificed his wicket for the team,” Gavaskar told Star Sports after India wrapped a 2-1 series win on Sunday in Hyderabad.
“Similarly, the asking rate in the 3rd T20I match was more than 9 runs an over, it’s never easy, you want to get off to a good start. He sacrificed his wicket over there.
