The Kolkata Knight Riders locked horns with the Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens stadium on Sunday in the 53rd match of the IPL 2023. The coin went the way of PBKS and they chose to bat first. PBKS lost Prabhsimran Singh early as he was caught by Rahamanullah Gurbaz off Harshit Rana for just 12 off 8 balls with three fours.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa did not last long either. He was sent packing for a three ball duck. Liam Livingstone could not get going as he was dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy for 15 off 9 balls with three fours.

Jitesh Sharma was sent ahead of Sam Curran to hit the spinners out of the park. The right-hander made only 21 off 18 balls with two sixes before he was caught behind by Gurbaz off Chakravarthy. Sam Curran was no match for Suyash Sharma’s guile as he departed for just 4.

While all the wickets were falling at one end, Dhawan made a calm and composed 57 off 47 balls with nine fours and one six.

Nitish Rana made a solid 51 off 38 balls for Kolkata Knight Riders in the run chase

His innings helped PBKS stay afloat in the contest. He fell when he was caught by Vaibhav Arora off Nitish Rana trying to up the scoring rate.  Rishi Dhawan could not get going as he was castled by Chakravarthy for 19 off 11 with one four and one six.

However, PBKS were provided the perfect finish courtesy Harpreet Brar and Shahrukh Khan. Shahrukh made a breezy unbeaten 21 off 8 balls with three fours and one six. Harpreet Brar made a quickfire 17 off 9 balls with two fours and one six as PBKS  ended at 179-7 in their 20 overs.

Chakravarthy was KKR’s best bowler with 3-26 in his four overs. In the run chase, Jason Roy came out swinging. He made 38 off 24 balls with eight fours. Nitish Rana stepped up to the plate and made a counterattacking 51 off 38 balls with six fours and one six. When Rana departed, he left the stage for Andre Russell and Rinku Singh.

Russell smashed 42 off 23 balls with three fours and three sixes. Rinku hit an unbeaten 21 off 10 balls with two fours and one six. Curran was particularly spanked at the end.  The match went down to the wire as 6 runs were needed off the last over and Russell was run out on the penultimate ball. Rinku Singh hit the last ball for four and Eden Gardens was up on its feet as KKR beat PBKS by five wickets.
