Gujarat Giants’ misery continues as they have now lost four consecutive games in the ongoing Women’s Premier League. Today, they were beaten by the Delhi Capitals who notched up their 3rd win to go on top of the points table.
The Giants had won the toss and opted to field first. The Capitals posted a total of 163 in their allocated 20 overs on the back of a half-century from the skipper, Meg Lanning. Gujarat did take wickets at regular intervals but they should have restricted the Capitals to a lower score. However, they failed to do that because of their disastrous fielding. There were plenty of dropped catches and fielding lapses which cost them big time. Meghna Singh was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of 4-37.
Then in the chase, their batting disappointed once again as they fell short of the target by 25 runs. None of the batters apart from Ashleigh Gardner got going as the Giants could only manage to score 138 runs. Jess Jonassen and Radha Yadav picked up 3 wickets apiece for the Capitals.
Jess Jonassen was adjudged the Player-of-the-Match for her significant role in Delhi’s victory. Speaking to the official broadcaster, she said that her familiarity with some of Gujarat’s batters worked in her favour. “Fortunately enough I have come up many times against those 3 in the Australia nets,” she said.
The side’s skipper, Meg Lanning expressed excitement as the team will now head to Delhi for the second leg of the tournament. “We will enjoy the win as that’s important and we will be looking forward to going to Delhi,” said Lanning.
Beth Mooney, the captain of the Giants, acknowledged that the fielding wasn’t up to the mark and that the lacklustre show on the field didn’t complement the phenomenal bowling. “The bowling has been disciplined, we let them down, to be honest, Not up to standards,” she said. She also said that the batters, herself included, need to step up at the earliest. Gujarat are now in a must-win situation and any more slip-ups will make it extremely tough for them to qualify for the play-offs.

Gujarat Giants batters reminding me of my own day at cricket – couldn’t get the bat on anything.
Two overs, not a single run from the bat. #WPL2024

A little more from Wolvaardt, Mooney and Litchfield, to help out Gardner, and this was a win for the taking for Gujarat Giants. A combined 27 off 27 from three big-name overseas batters tonight. #WPL2024
