Shubman Gill is referred to as the next big thing in Indian cricket ever since his Under-19 days back in 2018 and his dream run in 2023 in the ODI format just stamped that prediction by the former greats. But it’s more than three years since Gill made his debut in the Test format but still, he hasn’t been able to make this format his own, unlike the ODI format.
In the 22 Test matches he has played so far he has averaged only 31 and in the last six months since he has been playing at No.3 which he averaged in the early 20s which did not even put a question mark around his place in the test side despite being rated as one of the future stars.
Shubman Gill’s silenced critics with 3rd Test century
But after a string of low scores at No.3, Shubman Gill finally came out good and scored his 3rd international century at the test stage against England in Visakhapatnam. India were in a spot of bother after the falls of two early wickets of both the openers – Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Gill then steadied the ship with Shreyas Iyer who again failed to convert his good start into a big score and departed for 29 but Gill made the most of his start and went on to hit his 3rd test century including 11 fours and 2 sixes.
Gill proved Kevin Pietersen’s assessment right
Despite a below-average run in the test format, Shubman Gill still enjoys strong backing from his staunch fan base and some prominent ex-players. The most recent one to join the bandwagon was England’s aggressive batter Kevin Pietersen. The former English star compared Gill to the legendary South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis by comparing his stats with that of Gill after his initial burst in the international arena.
Pietersen wants the people and the Indian management to be more patient with Shubman Gill as he has it in him to make it big on the international stage and Shubman Gill with his majestic knock of 104 runs proved Kevin Pietersen right just a day after his tweet. Kevin Pietersen again took to X to say ‘Thank You’ to the young Indian batter making his prediction about the talented Indian batter come true.
