India and Australia lock horns with each other at Nagpur for the first Test of the four-match series at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India and Australia are clashing against each other on Indian soil for the first time since 2017. Rohit Sharma and Co. had a wonderful start and reduced Australia to 2-2 at the start of the first session. The seamers in Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami started well for India.

It was an in-swinging delivery from Siraj that wrapped Khawaja on the pads and trapped him leg before. Siraj bellowed loudly but the umpire Nitin Menon was not convinced. Rohit had a brief chat with keeper KS Bharat and upon seeing Siraj being persistent, he took the review with one second remaining on the DRS clock. To the naked eye, it looked not out but the hawk eye showed three reds.

I thought it might be clipping leg stump – Mark Vaugh

This became a point of debate, here is what Mark Waugh had to say, “I thought it was maybe sliding down leg-stump or, at best, clipping leg-stump. But I think, the Indians thought the same. they took until the last second to take the review. “I thought it might have clipping, but the Hawkeye said it was hitting the middle of leg-stump. I am not sure it was. Anyway, that was the first one down, a bit unlucky for Khawaja,” he added.

“Yes, it looked as if it would have clipped leg-stump. When you saw it from upstairs, anyone would have said it was clipping leg-stump. But the ball-tracking said it hit the leg-stump. India will be very happy with that review. Sometimes, as a batter, you get the rough end of the stick, I think Khawaja got one there,” Ravi Shastri said, weighing in on the debate.

For Australia, in the first innings at Nagpur, Marnus Labuschagne made 49 off 123 balls with eight fours and Steve Smith made 37 off 107 balls with seven fours. They were the two best batters for the side. For India, Ravindra Jadeja picked 5-47 in his 22 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin picked up 3-42 in 15.5 overs.
