Gautam Gambhir has been KKR’s most successful captain to date and it was under his captaincy that KKR witnessed their glory days when they lifted the IPL trophy twice in 2012 and 2014. Gautam Gambhir who was the chief mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants for the last two IPL seasons has joined the KKR franchise as a mentor.
Gautam Gambhir is known to be a man of substance and is popular for taking hard calls that are not populist. KKR owners and fans would be hoping that under the mentorship of Gautam Gambhir, they will lift the trophy for the third time.
Gambhir is also quite serious about honouring the faith that is bestowed upon him by the owners and is desperate to make KKR champions again. IPL which was during its initial years was looked upon more as an entertainment league that involves Bollywood, glamour, and after parties and now became the world’s richest and most popular cricketing league.
Gambhir’s stern warning to players ahead of IPL 2024
Gautam Gambhir echoes the same sentiment and warns his players to take it seriously and give their all to win the trophy for KKR. During an interview official broadcaster of the IPL- Star Sports, Gambhir said, “I made it very clear on Day 1 that IPL for me, is serious cricket. It’s not about Bollywood, it’s not about you, it’s not about after party and stuff. It’s about going out there and playing competitive cricket and that’s the reason why I feel is the toughest league in the world because it is proper cricket.”
“It is probably closest to international cricket as compared to any other league and if you want to be known as a successful franchise, you should be able to deliver on the cricket field.”
“Obviously it was the most profile team as well. But I’ve always been a believer that ultimately it’s not about glamour. It’s about what we do on the cricket fields is all that matters and KKR should not be known for off-field activities. They should be known for what we deliver on the cricket field,” he further added.
Gambhir further hailed KKR’s fans as the most loyal that has seen. He reminisced that despite going through a lean in the initial three years, they remained loyal to their team and supported through thick and thin.
“I think there are very passionate fans. We need to be honest with them. We need to try and probably bring that happiness on their smiles because I’ve always believed I think the most loyal fans have been fans from Kolkata because they’ve gone through a lot in the first three years of the IPL,” Gambhir concluded.
