Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced off with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) with both sides needing a win but for different aspirations. CSK, with a win, could have sealed their spot in the Playoffs, while a KKR defeat would have meant they would have been mathematically out of the Playoffs race. CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat first on a sticky and turning track at the Chepauk stadium.
That decision might have proved wrong by the KKR bowlers as they were splendid today, especially during the middle overs. By removing Rayudu and Moeen in the middle overs, Narine was a huge game-changer who undoubtedly cost CSK a minimum of 10-15 runs. In the powerplay, Ruturaj Gaikwad with Devon Conway actually established a strong foundation once more with a fifty collaboration, but Varun quickly eliminated Ruturaj and Rahane and that helped Narine make significant progress.
The ball was barely being timed by Jadeja, however, Dube was able to generate several runs. Otherwise, 140 seemed challenging,if the duo didn’t smash the ball during the death overs. KKR pacers executed a flawless finish. This was a below-average total, although MSD is known to be a pro at leading spinners. This might be difficult for KKR if Theekshana finishes with a strong day but it can get challenging if KKR manage to make a good partnership.
Deepak Chahar was lethal at the start as he was able to get some early scalps which restricted KKR to 33/3 after 4.3 overs. In his initial three overs, the seamer dismissed Jason Roy for only 12, Venkatesh Iyer for just 9, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz on just one.
Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh reignited the Kolkata Knight Riders run pursuit as Chennai Super Kings urgently searched for a breakthrough. The duo was able to soak up the pressure and more importantly tackle the CSK spinners effectively which led to them losing no wickets in the middle overs.
Both Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh completed their well deserved fifties and made sure that the run rate was less than 6 before the start of the death overs. Rinku Singh lost his wicket because of a brilliant run-out by Moeen Ali. Kolkata completed the chase with 9 balls to spare as they kept their playoffs dream alive.
