‘Credit goes to Thala’- Fans react as former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachitra Senanayake slapped with match-fixing charges

Former Sri Lankan Cricketer Sachitra Senanayake is in dark waters after he was slapped with match-fixing charges and was also banned from making any overseas travel by the court in Colombo. Senanayake starred in one Test, 24 T20Is and 49 ODIs for the Island nation. Senanayake also played for Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The off-spinner was also a part of the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.

The player has been charged with the allegation of fixing games in the Lanka Premier League 2020 edition. He reportedly coaxed two players to fix games over the telephone. The Chief Magistrate’s court in Colombo passed an order to the  Controller General of Immigration and Emigration to implicate a travel ban on Senanayake, which will stand good for a timeline of three months.

The court order was taken from the Attorney General’s Department. The court was conveyed that the Attorney General’s Department had been given instructions by the Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry to frame criminal charges against the former off-spinner. Senanayake was a big part of the 2014 World Cup for Bangladesh when Sri Lanka won the title. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sri Lanka bond flourished in the IPL where in 2013, where he picked up 9 wickets in 8 games.

He had the best figures of 2-26 in that edition. Senanyake’s action was not easy to pick when he played the game. When the off-spinner has a stint with the Sixers in the Big Bash, some Australian commentators called for more subcontinental players in the Australian league. The Sri Lankan cricketer also made headlines when he ran out Jos Buttler in an ODI game.

Talking about his career, he took 53 wickets in ODIs, at an average of 35.35 and at an economy rate of 4.76. In the 50-over format, he has one four-wicket haul. When it comes to T20Is, the off-spinner took 35 wickets in 24 matches at an economy rate of 6.77.
