India and Australia are locked horns in the first ODI of the three-match series on Friday, September 22 at Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. The Indian team won the opening match of the series by five wickets with eight balls to spare courtesy of some brilliant batting as well as bowling performances. With this win, India became the number-one ranked ODI side in the world. The Indian skipper KL Rahul won the toss and elected to bowl first putting the visitors to bat in heat.
The Indian seamers set the tone with the new ball as Mohammed Shami picked Mitchell Marsh (4) in the third game of the match. With the bat David Warner (52) and Steve Smith (41 off 60) formed a solid 94-run partnership after an early setback, stabilizing Australia’s innings. Ravindra Jadeja ended this partnership by catching Warner at deep mid-wicket. Mohammad Shami returned to the attack and shattered Smith’s stumps with a sharp in-swinger.
The game saw a peculiar dismissal as Marnus Labuschagne attempted a reverse sweep against Ravichandran Ashwin but only managed to edge it. The ball ricocheted off KL Rahul’s pads, hit the stumps, and caught Labuschagne out of the crease, resulting in a stumping. Remarkably, this marked Ashwin’s first wicket in his ODI comeback after a 21-months.
Australia aimed for a strong finish at 248/5 in 46.4 overs, but their hopes were dashed by Mohammad Shami, who secured his second career five-wicket haul. Shami’s exceptional spell, with figures of 5/51 in ten overs, led to Australia being dismissed for 276. Other Indian bowlers, including Bumrah, Ashwin, and Jadeja, also contributed with wickets.
In the quest for the target, both the Indian openers were sublime in the run chase. Both Ruturaj Gaikwad (71) and Shubman Gill (74) stitched together a target of 142 runs. But once, Gaikwad was dismissed Shreyas Iyer also fell in quick succession. Following this, the team found themselves at 185/4 and required a strong partnership to secure victory.
In this crucial juncture, captain KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav combined forces, adding 80 runs for the fifth wicket. Their collaboration ensured the team’s triumph, with Yadav achieving his maiden ODI fifty. Meanwhile, Rahul remained unbeaten with 58 runs, guiding the team to victory with eight balls to spare and five wickets in hand. ย Mohammed Shami was awarded the Player of the Match award for his terrific bowling spells of 5/51.
Let us look at how Twitter has reacted to this:
