Cristiano Ronaldo, the legendary Portuguese player, was roped in by the Al-Nassr club from Saudi Arabia for a whopping annual contract of INR 1,770 crore, leaving millions of his followers from European countries disappointed. To add more, fans opined Ronaldo could never be a part of the English Premier League or the Champions League again until a clause was found in his contract that provides the facility to get back to the league.

As far as the clause is concerned, reports emerged on January 3, Tuesday, claiming that there is a clause in his contract that would allow him to go on loan to Newcastle United if they qualify for the Champions League as the club is owned by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. The reports came as a sigh of relief, although it did not satisfy all of his fans who claimed that it would not be enough for a player of such stature.

Let Cristiano Ronaldo go and live: Rio Ferdinand

It was all criticism for Ronaldo until the Red Devils star Rio Ferdinand came to the player’s rescue, having a different view than most other footballers. To add more, Ferdinand claimed that it was acceptable for a footballer of a legendary stature to live a life of his own, after having what could be called a stellar career.

“It was great to see David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, it was great to see them go to America. What a way to finish their careers, getting great money, going to a league that’s not as competitive, let them go, they’ve deserved that, they’ve earned the right,” Ferdinand was quoted as saying.

“That’s all I saw in the media. But because it’s Saudi Arabia it’s sad, it’s a disgrace. Let a man go and live, let a man go and enjoy it. It’s a new adventure he’s taking his family to experience a new culture. Let’s let them go to the States and have a swansong year and just toss it off. It stinks we’re not hearing this type of talk. It’s out of order,” he added.
