In the 64th match of the Indian Premier League 2023, Delhi Capitals beat Punjab Kings by 15 runs at the HPCA cricket stadium in Dharamshala. With this victory, DC also knocked out PBKS from the ongoing tournament. However, an umpiring decision during the last over of the game left fans split on social media.

While changing 214 PBKS needed 33 runs off the last over and well-set batter Liam Livingston was in the middle. He Smacked 16 runs off the first four balls against Ishant Sharma. The fourth ball of the over was a waist-height full toss ball which was declared no-ball by field umpires. DC skipper David Warner went upstairs to review the decision but nothing changed for them. However, Livingston failed to hold their nerves and was dismissed by Ishant as DC clinched the game.

After the match, many fans and cricket pundits pointed out that decision and questioned the inconsistency and poor level of umpiring in the league. Senior presenter Harsha Bhogle Tweeted and said, “On the waist-high no-ball judgement by the 3rd umpire, there must be consistency going ahead.” Responding to his tweet DC owner Parth Jindal said, “I for one seriously cannot understand the rule – the ball in the WPL final that got Shafali Verma out was a no ball if the same rules apply that applied tonight. What is the rule? @IPL.”

“My decision backfired us”, says Shikhar Dhawan after losing the game

As PBKS lost the game they are now out of the race for playoffs. With this loss, the team is set to face Rajasthan Royals in their last league game on Friday at the HPCA cricket stadium in Dharamshala. However, after Delhi Capitals’ victory, PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan admitted that his decision to bowl spin in the last over backfired his team.

He said, “It was frustrating. We didn’t bowl well in the first six wickets, we should have taken some wickets the way it was swinging. It’s quite a close game, but can’t help it. There was hope after that no ball, Livi played a great knock, unfortunately, we couldn’t end up on the other side. I feel my decision to bowl spin-off the last over backfired. The momentum also went there. Before that, my fast bowlers got hit for 18-20 runs.

“Those two overs cost us the game. Our bowlers didn’t pitch the ball up in the powerplay. That was the plan and unfortunately, they couldn’t execute it. In this sort of a wicket, whether we take wickets or not, we should bowl at the right areas which we are not doing for quite a long time. That’s hurting us. For every powerplay, we have been giving 50-60 runs, we should be taking wickets as well. We knew that it’d swing for 1-2 overs. We lost the first wicket in the 2nd over, I got out and the 1st over was also a maiden – we lost six balls over there.”
