The Uganda cricket team has etched its name into cricket history by clinching qualification for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. Thursday’s scenes in the Ugandan dressing room were filled with jubilation as they confirmed their inaugural appearance in a senior World Cup after an impressive performance in the African leg of T20 World Cup qualifiers in Windhoek.

Uganda’s decisive nine-wicket victory over Rwanda in their final game sealed their qualification. They earned the spot alongside Namibia. While Uganda celebrates this achievement, it comes at the expense of heartbreak for Zimbabwe, narrowly missing out on the coveted opportunity despite a commendable win against Kenya in their last fixture.

In an earlier match, Zimbabwe exhibited dominance against Kenya, securing a resounding victory by 110 runs. Sikandar Raza’s impressive innings of 82, combined with Sean Williams’ half-century, propelled Zimbabwe to a formidable total of 217/4. However, their fate hinged on Uganda’s performance against Rwanda.

What’s the Babar Azam connection with Uganda?

The Cricket Cranes dashed Zimbabwe’s hopes with a stellar display, dismissing Rwanda for a mere 65 runs. Uganda efficiently chased down the target in just 8.1 overs with nine wickets to spare, sealing their historic qualification. This triumph not only marked Uganda’s milestone but also left Zimbabweans grappling with the disappointment of missing out on the forthcoming T20 World Cup set to unfold in the Caribbean and the United States next summer.

Meanwhile, after Uganda’s victory, fans trolled ex-Pakistan skipper Babar Azam. The star batter was often criticised for his blistering performances against comparatively small teams. Seeing Uganda qualify, fans started trolling Babar and calling Uganda his new favourite opposition. In between, some hilarious memes went viral on social media, showcasing how happy Babar Azam would be after knowing that Uganda was going to play in the T20 World Cup.
