Yuvraj Singh has been a match winner for India in international cricket over the years. The Indian great had a wonderful ODI career for the Men in Blue. The Southpaw played 304 ODIs for India and scored 8701 runs for the country. He had an average of 36.56 and at a strike rate of 87.68. The left-hander has 14 hundreds and 52 fifties in the One-day format.
On this day in 2011, Yuvraj produced a performance for the ages as he was suffering from cancer throughout the 2011 World Cup and also against West Indies. But he was undeterred, and he hit 113 off 123 balls against the men from the Carribean. In the same match, he also picked up 2/18. The match was held at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
In a low scoring encounter in hot conditions at Chennai, India won the toss and opted to bat first. Yuvraj Singh held the Indian innings together with his century. He received support from Virat Kohli who made 59 off 76 balls with five fours. These large-hearted contributions took India to 268 in their 50 overs. Ravi Rampaul was the best bowler for the West Indies as he picked up 5-51 in his 10 overs.
The second innings was an innings of two halves. Devon Smith the left-hander threatened to take the game away from India with his stroke-filled 81 off 97 balls with seven fours and one six. But, once Zaheer Khan got Smith out, the West Indies could not recover from there. The Indians picked up wickets at regular intervals to bundle the Men in Maroon for just 188. Zaheer picked up 3-26 in his six overs.
Yuvraj and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up 2-41 and 2-18 to provide valuable support to Zaheer’s heroics with the ball. India won the match by 80 runs. Then the beat Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the quarterfinals, semifinals and final respectively to clinch the 2011 World Cup after 28 years. Yuvraj was awarded the Player of the tournament He scored 362 runs and picked up 15 wickets for India.

Damn I wish the World Cup started now…..it feels weird that it’s towards the end of the year. Much better when the World Cup is earlier in the year.
