Star India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has earned his maiden Test call for the West Indies tour. With an exceptional performance in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League, Ruturaj earned his place in the 15-member squad. Ahead of the first match of the series, Ruturaj, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, shared their precious memories with former India skipper MS Dhoni.
Speaking about his bond and experience with Dhoni, Ruturaj said that he feels lucky to spend time with Dhoni. Everyone wants to learn something from him, and I am lucky to get 2-3 months with him. “I feel very lucky and fortunate that I can spend time with MS Dhoni. Players are desperate to meet him after the match to gain experience, and I’m very lucky to spend 2-3 months every year with him. He’s available throughout the year for everyone”, said Ruturaj while speaking with Jaiswal.
It’s worth noting that Ruturaj plays for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. He has been phenomenal for CSK in the opening order, especially after Faf du Plessis’s departure from the team. He scored 635 runs in 16 matches in 2021 and 368 runs in 14 matches the next year. In the recent season, he scored 590 runs in 15 matches at an average of 42.14.
I don’t have a lot of words: Yashasvi Jaiswal
Another Youngster who got a chance on the national team is Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal, who won the emerging player of the year award in IPL 2023, also shared his experience with Dhoni. He said that he got goosebumps while meeting Dhoni for the first time. “I don’t have a lot of words to say (about my first meeting with Dhoni). It’s like you are watching someone from childhood and you meet them and get goosebumps”, Jaiswal told Ruturaj.
Further, Ruturaj said that Dhoni played a very big role in shaping his career and has taught him to stay grounded in any situation. Notably, Jaiswal might get a chance in the first game. He is most likely to open innings with skipper Rohit Sharma. With this new opening pair, India might try Shubman Gill at number three in place of Cheteshwar Pujara.
