ODI World Cup 2023

‘Aur isko King Kohli se compare karte hai’- Fans react to Babar Azam’s flop show against Sri Lanka during ODI World Cup 2023

Yet another failure for the Pakistan skipper during ODI World Cup 2023.

Match number 8 of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw Pakistan take on Sri Lanka on Tuesday. A huge crowd had come to see both the teams in Hyderabad. This was Pakistan’s second game at this venue after their tournament-opening win against the Netherlands.

Sri Lanka had come into the match on the back of their loss to South Africa in Delhi on Saturday. Dasun Shanaka and his men had conceded over 400 runs and lost the game by a huge margin. Kusal Mendis was the only consolation for the Sri Lankan team with the bat.

The toss went Sri Lanka’s way and they decided to bat first on a very good wicket in Hyderabad. Both the teams made one change each to their playing XI. Kasun Rajitha made way for Maheesh Theekshana while Fakhar Zaman was replaced by Abdullah Shafique.

Babar Azam records his second consecutive failure –

Chasing 345 to win, Babar Azam came into bat to replace Imam Ul Haq. The Pakistani skipper began his innings with a well-timed shot off his legs for four. Dilshan Madushanka then bowled the ball down the leg side.

Babar Azam poked at the ball as Kusal Mendis did the rest. The Pakistani skipper’s start to ODI World Cup 2023 continued to be miserable with the bat as he was out for 10. Against the Dutch, Babar Azam was out for just 5 runs to continue his poor ODI World Cup 2023 campaign.

Imam Ul Haq scored 12 runs from 12 balls when the short ball did the trick again. Madushanka bowled a short ball as Imam UL Haq went for a hook. The Pakistani opener was caught by Kusal Perera who was fielding at fine leg to give the Lankans their 1st wicket.

Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama scored tons to help Sri Lanka score 344/9 from their 50 overs. Pathum Nissanka began with 51 runs from 61 balls with 7 fours and a six. The third wicket stand between Mendis and Samarawickrama was worth 111 runs which came in just 69 balls.

Sri Lankan fans saw Kusal Mendis score 122 runs from just 77 balls to record the fastest World Cup ton for his nation. Mendis’s innings contained 14 fours and 6 sixes. Samarawickrama scored 108 runs from 89 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes to help Sri Lanka post the massive score.
