India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1 after the Ahmedabad draw. This is the fourth time in a row that India have beaten Australia to take the trophy. Ravichandran Ashwin starred with the ball for India in the four-match Test series and claimed 25 wickets for India to bag the ‘Player of the series award’. With the bat, he scored 86 runs for India. Ashwin has been a giant for India in Test Cricket.

The fans were very happy that India won the series and rode on Ashwin’s match-winning performances. However, some fans have drawn comparisons between Ashwin and former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh. Some fans have alleged that Harbhajan has been envious of Ashwin because of the fact that Ashwin gets tailor-made pitches due to which he is able to bag wickets in bunches. Ashwin has now addressed the matter with an official statement on his YouTube channel.

The main problem is the ego – Ravichandran Ashwin

He said that in India, some players are of the opinion that they are the greatest. But there will be players from the next generation who will perform better. So any player needs to accept the fact that there will be a player who can perform better and achieve higher laurels in the game.

“Even, in India, we have this hyping mentality and superstar culture. It is prevalent here in India. If someone achieves something, we keep them in superstar status. The main problem of our humanity is the ego. Many of them will learn to keep their ego aside. But, this superstar thing will bring back the ego. We keep thinking that we are the best. And then suddenly, someone from the next generation comes along and says, “Can you just wait for some time? Let me just show you how this is done.”  Ashwin said.

“So, one thing we need to understand and accept is that there will always be someone better than us. Only then we can adjust to today’s reality and lead a happy life. Only then we can stop using this statement “In those days when we played…As I said, the realization of someone better than us will always prevail should hit us,” Ashwin added. After the fans heard the statement, they thought Ashwin was taking a dig at Harbhajan.
